How to add mullions to curtain wall in revit
The Curtain Wall tool in Revit can do much more than glazed walls. It can be used for walls with complex patterns, special railings and even casework. These tips should help you understand and master this awesome tool. Curtain Walls contains most properties of a basic wall.
They have bottom and top constraints and their profile can be modified. Curtain walls are different because of a few key additional features. Have a close look at the image below. These division can be horizontal or vertical. Curtain Walls are created in the same way as regular walls. Select the wall tool in the architecture tab. The difference is that when selecting a type, you have to scroll down to select a wall in the Curtain Wall category.
These walls have a glass icon next to them. Create a new wall and set all constraints. It will look like a plain glass wall. Here is how to fill it up with curtain wall elements. Most of the time you want to use an automatic curtain wall, with fixed dimensions, specific glass and mullions types.
These walls are set to mimic specs from manufacters. Select curtain wall and click Edit Type. Set layouts and spacing for vertical and horizontal grids. Use Fixed Distance to set a specified distance between grids, except for the filler at beggining or end. In the type properties, scroll to Vertical and Horizontal Mullions category. Add a mullion type to each category. By default, curtain walls will be embeded in a regular wall, like a window would. W hat Revit cate gorizes as curtain wall we use for anything from actual curtain to skin, store front, interior partitions, windows and so much more. It's a very versatile tool. And as versatile as the curtain wall is the mullions we place in them are less so, or so it would seem. Revit works like this Each mullion type is based on a profile family. The profiles that ship with Revit are system profiles. You'll notice in the type properties of the mullions, the profile is set to either Default or in some cases System Mullion Profile: Rectangular.
Corner mullion families don't reference a profile at all. You cannot edit these profiles and there are only a few parameters to adjust them. You can change the profile in the type properties of all mullion types except the corner mullions. Corner mullions are not easily reloaded into a project.
Take care when purging models to avoid purging corner mullions. The good news is you don't have to settle for the out of the box mullions. There is a Revit family template specifically designed for the creation of mullions.
Since mullions are base on profiles, the skies the limit as to the shape you want to create There are limitations of course, but there's one mullion profile I want to focus on in particular. The mullion used with a butt glazed joint is a popular one and I'm asked all the time how to create it. It's actually not too difficult, but there are definitely some tips and tricks that you have to know to make this one work the way it should. As stated earlier, mullions are just profile lines drawn two dimensionally.
Revit does the rest for you. Don't forget to read the little note in the mullion profile family template about where curtain panels are trimmed what a mullion is inserted into the curtain wall. Understanding this makes all the difference. I like to add a dimension parameter to the length of the mullion so it's easy to stretch. You can also add a width dimension parameter to it for even more control. Load this family into your project and add it to a mullion family.All the same Lynda.

Related Courses.In Revit, Curtain Walls are a very special type of system family. However in this tutorial I am going to show you how to build your Revit Curtain Wall fro scratch.
That way will you how they go together and consequently, be able to back-ward engineer a pre-defined one should you need to. Start off in a Plan View this is the easiest view orientation by far in which to create Revit Walls.
With this Type selected, go ahead and place a straight length of it into your model.
If you now switch to a 3D View you can see the piece of Curtain Wall that we have just placed- it should look broadly speaking like the one in the above image. Just to clarify: What we have here is one single piece of Curtain Wall, hosting a single Curtain Panel which just happens to be the same size as the Curtain Wall itself.
And that is exactly what we are are going to do next. Se we have our basic Curtain Wall element. What we would normally do now is to sub-divide it using Curtain Grid Lines. Now to do this next step, you are probably best viewing your Curtain Wall in Elevation- i. As you do so, you will see Revit offer you the opportunity to place a Curtain Grid Line. Hovering anywhere inside the perimeter will NOT allow you to do so. This will allow you to set the spacing between the Curtain Grid Lines both horizontally and vertically different spacings for each if you wish and then all you need to do is start defining where you want your Curtain Walls to be in your model and they will be created with the Panels and Grid Spacings that you have set previously.
We do this for for 2 main reasons There is no command to specifically create Curtain Panels. Another way to explain this is that Curtain Panels are simply the space occupied inside the perimeter of Curtain Grid Lines. System Family Curtain Panels are fairly simplistic- they can comprise of basically a material and a thickness for it.
If you want to change the Type of one of your Curtain Panels, you first need to select it. Now this can be tricky to the uninitiated. By far the easiest way to do so is to place your cursor over one of the perimeter edges of the Curtain Panel you wish to select. Just take a few seconds to keep hitting TAB and see how Revit cycles through the following Once you have selected this tool, hover over the Curtain Grid Lines you placed in the last step. When you click on one of these Grid Lines, Mullion segments are added by default to the entire length of that particular Curtain Grid Line.
The end of the Ribbon menu should look like this…. Here you have some option as to how you add your Mullion segments.
So what if you want to actually combine 2 adjacent Curtain Panels and in doing so create just one single panel. I have identified 2 Curtain Panels- numbered 1 and 2.
What we want to do is make these into a single panel. First of all we need to delete the segment of Mullion assuming we have applied Mullions to our Curtain Wall.
Go ahead and select the Mullion segments- remember the trick of hovering over it and using the TAB key to cycle through the available elements.
But we still have 2 separate Curtain Panels adjacent to each other- see the image below. So go ahead and select the vertical Curtain Grid Line between the two Panels- remember to use the TAB key to make this selection process easier. And then simply click on the segment of Curtain Grid Line that you wish to delete. SO in the image below, you would click on the Grid Line at the point where the arrow is pointing to. Once you deselect the vertical Curtain Grid Line, you will see that the 2 Curtain Panels have now been replaced by a single Curtain Panel.Very useful article!

The Revit model needs to be constructed in a way that reflects how it is actually going to be constructed. As a building envelope contractor we need more from the Revit model, we need to be able to construct the model in such a way, so that we can not only accurately represent the components in the model but also schedule and order the required components.Bar room hire newcastle
We have instead gone down the Generic model route, with all of the items broken down into generic model sub-categories. Using generic models hosted, on reference planes or other items within the model, has given our families greater flexibility and allows them to be constructed in such a way so that they report all of the information required to fill in the order schedule which is sent to the component supplier.
Try achieving this with a non-rectangular curtain wall panel or rainscreen panel. Regards Darren. Hi Darren, Thanks for the comment. I agree that the Curtain Wall tools in Revit could use an overhaul to better model the curtain walls that architects often envision. This allows us to build units that can change should the architect or project requirements require a revision to the design. While this can fulfill a scheduling and LOD requirement for the project, it also significantly increases the file size and project time.

I have a doubt: what about corner mullions? I've searching around and found that we can insert detail items on profile families for higher detail level, but we can't edit corner mullions. Often, this strategy includes extending the vertical beyond the top horizontal to create an additional anchoring point. One solution is to create a Generic Object family and place it wherever the extension is required. In this post, we will explain how to create an extended vertical in a Revit curtain wall object using mullion profiles and infill types. Start by creating a Revit Curtain Wall object. Create a captured mullion profile as shown here.
The procedure for creating custom mullion profiles can be found on our site in this blog post. Name and save the file then load the profile into the Revit project. Edit the profile eliminating the glass pocket and pressure plate, Use the Save As option to save the profile with a different name then load it into the project as well. In the curtain wall project, select all of the panels, select System Panel Glazed as the panel type, and then click the Edit Type option.
In the Type Properties dialog box, change the Offset value to Click Mullion from the Architecture tab then click the Edit Type button. In the Type Properties dialog box, click the Duplicate button then enter a name for the new mullion. In the Type Properties dialog, change the Profile to the first profile that you created in this exercise. Place the mullions as show below, using the Grid Line Segment option from the Placement panel.
Click the Edit Type button for the mullion, duplicate it, and then change the profile to the profile that you created without the pressure plate.
Place the new mullions in the remaining, short grid line segments. Select the top horizontal mullions then click the Make Continuous option in the Mullion panel. In the real world, the pressure plate extends past the edge of the vertical, while it does not in Revit.In Revityou add a door to a curtain wall by customizing a curtain panel so that it schedules as a door. To delete a curtain wall door, select it and change it back to a curtain wall panel using the Type Selector. Open a plan, elevation, or 3D view of the curtain wall. Move the cursor over an edge of the curtain panel to be customized until one of its mullions or the curtain wall highlights. Press Tab until the panel highlights, and then click to select it and display the pin icon. Click the pin icon to unpin the panel. In the Type Selector, select a curtain wall door to replace the panel.

Use th TAB key until you select the curtain grid and use move to move it.
